Dr Colin Brock presentation
The Centre for Global Development Through Education hosted a Public Lecture ‘ISSUES RELATED TO SUPERVISING PhD STUDENTS‘ on Thursday, the 21st of May, given by Dr. Colin Brock (UNESCO Chair, Oxford University) at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.
This presentation was concerned with various aspects of the work of a doctoral supervisor in the field of education al studies from helping the candidate to select a suitable theme, through designing and conducting original research, structuring the thesis, drafting it and finally completing it for the viva voce examination. The Presentation was very well attended, with people coming from Irish Aid Offices, Limerick, TCD, Dublin, IT Tralee, (UL) Limerick and (UCC) Cork and NUIG, Galway to hear Dr Brock’s experiences. Profile: Dr Colin Brock is currently UNESCO Chair in Education as a Humanitarian Response at the University of Oxford where he has worked in the field of Comparative and International Education for 17 years. Immediately before he was Chair of the International Education Unit at the University of Hull. A graduate of the University of Durham in Geography and Anthropology, Dr Brock was a high school teacher of geography and geology for eight years before becoming a Lecturer in Geography at the University of Reading. From there he spent over two years in the Commonwealth Caribbean as UK Government Education Adviser before moving on the University of Leeds and then Hull. Over the last 35 years he has spent significant periods of time in the field in developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America working for a range of international agencies such as the World Bank, DfID, the British Council, EU, Commonwealth Secretariat and UNDP. Dr Brock has authored or edited about 30 books and 100 chapters, articles and research reports, while supervising 71 successfully completed doctorates.
